The screening of a brand-new series, Impilo: The Scam, at The Venue Green Park in Sandton on Wednesday night drew an interesting crowd last week.

Organised by Tshepiso Mokhema, a senior specialist for reputation at MultiChoice, the event was in partnership with Mzansi Magic and local film company A Tribe Called Story.

Actress, presenter and model Anele Ney Zondo was the MC.

A cocktail party kicked off activities with a range of snacks on offer. They included marinated steak, sweet potato and rice with chicken curry and it tasted really good.

Storytellers and film makers came together to witness the first episode of Mzansi’s brand new series.

MultiChoice corporate affair’s Joe Heshu, after welcoming the guests, gave the platform to Mbalizethu Zulu, the executive producer of the series.

The 24-year-old Zulu said MultiChoice had invested R2.5 billion towards helping young people develop their careers in film making.

Zulu said A Tribe Called Story had produced three movies for prime time broadcast on Mzansi Magic – Moratuwa, Umqhele and Unkosikazi Wokuqala – which were all well received by audiences. They were now producing their first 13-part series.

She said although this was not a smooth-sailing production, it was an exciting project.

Then it was time to watch what we were there for – the screening of the first episode of Impilo, which left most of us asking for more. If this first episode is anything to go by, then viewers are in for a treat when the show starts tomorrow.

Co-producer of the series Thembalethu Mfebe said he was grateful to everyone who had contributed to the production, including supervising producers from Clive Morris Productions.

Veteran actor Desmond Dube makes a return to the small screen after a four year hiatus.

Dube plays the character of Khulubuse, the main scammer who uses his son to scam the community through a pyramid scheme called Impilo. The 50-year-old actor, who has been in the industry for more than two decades, told City Press that the drama series revolves around a man who is a greedy opportunist who is desperately trying to put his family together.

Dube said the man was now trying to clean up his act, but since he had never worked in a clean environment, he repeated the same mistakes by dragging his son Mnqhobi into his scheming by making him scam the community through a pyramid scheme.

Viewers will be exposed to how pyramid schemes turn people’s lives upside down, the consequences of crime and how a lack of trust and communication can end up ruining the relationships in families.

The celebrities who attended the screening were dressed to the nines. MC Zondo stood out in a well-designed white long-sleeved jump suit, actor Siya Raymond Sepotokele showed up in a traditional Zulu headband with traditional Zulu clip-on earings (iziqhala) and brown formal shoes, while actor Nkosinathi Maphalala, popularly known as Nay Maps, wore a nice green blazer and matching green Nike takkies.

Unathi Guma showed off a black outfit with a traditional Xhosa doek and a beaded Ndebele necklace, while Dube was in an all-black outfit.

Catch Impilo: The Scam on Monday at 8pm on Mzansi Magic channel 161.
