Stuck with the grandkids? Here are some holiday spots for old and young

2019-12-19 12:42

We’re living in a world where everything seems to be happening in fast-forward. With work and studies consuming the majority of our time, it’s becoming harder to carve out a few hours or days for our loved ones, particularly “grandy-time”, when grandparents and grandchildren can bond.

Add to the mix that the older and younger generations have different ideas about what makes an unforgettable vacation, and it can seem overwhelming. Whether your idea of a holiday is relaxing in a hot tub, going fishing with friends or participating in fun-filled activities, though, in South Africa we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to planning a holiday that is suitable for the whole family.

Where else in the world can take your kids to see the Big Five, enjoy some quality time with your grandchildren on a pool deck, and go fishing with your mates, all in one day?

So, when your adult children are stuck at work, and do not know that to do with their kids during the school holidays, why not take the opportunity to go away for a few days with the grandchildren?

Here are four great places that give grandies of all ages the opportunity to bond and explore something totally new, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Hoedspruit AfriCamps - A Wild Getaway in Greater Kruger

If your family is keen on heading outdoors for a couple of days, the AfriCamp glamping tents at Hoedspruit are perfect for those seeking comfort while being out in nature. Located right next to the Kruger National Park, here you’ll be able to start your day with an early morning safari drive with the kids, spend the late afternoon fishing in front of your tent, and end your day off star-gazing in a private outdoor wood-fired hot tub once the little ones have been tucked into bed. The best part is that it offers you intimacy, privacy and amazing views, giving a whole new meaning to nature on your doorstep. Eleven fully equipped 2-bedroomed tents are beautifully dotted around a magnificent dam, a perfect place to spend time with your loved ones.

Club Mykonos

This Greek-themed holiday resort located on the shores of the Langebaan Lagoon is the perfect place for those looking for an adventure and who would like to relax while enjoying some pampering. The resort also has a lovely restaurant overlooking its harbour where you can enjoy fish and chips with the family. There are also loads of fun activities for adrenaline junkies to enjoy - jet skiing, quad biking and paint-balling. Just make a booking beforehand, because these activities are really popular. For those who prefer a quiet and relaxed afternoon, there are paddle boats available for daily use - little ones will love spending time with a grandy on one of these!

Sun City

When it comes to selecting the perfect holiday destination for the entire family, Sun City will always come out tops. The resort has enough activities to entertain all family members, no matter their ages. One of the main highlights of the resort is the Valley of the Waves, a man-made beach. This water park features daring slides and lazy river rafting for all to enjoy. Sun City is also known for its world-class golf courses which are perfect for those who prefer to spend the day practising their golf. Just be careful as the golf courses are also home to more than twenty Nile crocodiles.

Pine Lake Marina Resort

Located on the banks of the beautiful Swartvlei Lake outside Sedgefield, Pine Lake Marina is a 3-star self-catering resort perfect for families who would like to escape the bustling city for a bit. You’ll also find all kinds of activities for all members of the family to enjoy. If you’re in the mood to relax, you can book a jacuzzi for yourself, while the kids enjoy bicycle rides around the reserve. There is also a sports bar to catch up with friends while watching rugby. Pine Lake Marina also has a large number of braai areas for you to enjoy with the family.
