Survivor SA winner to buy his house

Cape Town - He wasn’t what you’d call a castaway favourite and, let’s face it, he rubbed pretty much everyone up the wrong way, but Tom Swartz was declared the winner of season 6 of M-Net’s Survivor SA: Philippines at a live finale broadcast in Cape Town on Thursday night.

Swartz, an adventure camp manager, managed to convince the jury to hand him the R1m prize and title of Sole Survivor over Cape Town radio producer Jeanne Michel.

Having spent their 39th and final day on the remote island, Michel and Swartz put their case to the jury, who gave both a bit of a grilling, probing Michel’s perceived lack of effort around camp and criticising Swartz about his alpha-male behaviour throughout the game.

But when host Nico Panagio opened the voting urn, a relieved Swartz was finally able to celebrate after months of anxiously awaiting the result.

“Getting home was one of the best days of my life,” the 41-year-old Swartz, former head of an anti-poaching unit, told City Press.

“I wanted to prove to everybody that I could; so if you’re wondering whether you can, just get it done. It’s possible.”

And what is he going to do with his money? “I am going to buy the house we are living in so that there is never a time that we don’t have a home.”

The channel said the show would return for a seventh season – not announcing the location yet – after the show’s success grew M-Net’s Thursday night slot by about 70%.
