Mzansi Magic has already released three new shows (Nkululeko, iKhaya and Yim'Lo) and 2018 looks like it’ll be another whopping year for TV, movies and streaming.

So what are the big celluloid events we can look forward to?

The River
Scheduled: January 29
The likes of Sindi Dlathu, Hlomla Dandala and Moshidi Motshegwa will star in 1Magic’s (formerly Vuzu Amp) new telenovela, The River. According to the channel, it’s all about “the deadly result that comes about when the greedy world of society’s upper crust collides with that of ordinary common folk”. Spicy!

Inxeba
Scheduled: February 2
It has already had limited runs and has been shown at film festivals. Now, the acclaimed gay Xhosa initiation film Inxeba will see its nationwide release on February 2. Finally, audiences across South Africa will be able to watch the local film that has been short-listed for an Oscar.

Dancing with the Stars
Scheduled: February 4
Remember Strictly Come Dancing on SABC? M-Net now owns the franchise and it will come in the form of Dancing with the Stars next month. Contestants already billed to compete include Thembisa Mdoda, Frank Opperman, Juanita De Villiers, Liesl Laurie and Wayde van Niekerk’s mom, Odessa Swarts.

Black Panther
Scheduled: February 16
This Marvel adventure about the king of a mythical civilisation who turns into a superhero has had local audiences buzzing. The all-black cast includes Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o and Forest Whitaker, as well as our very own Atandwa and John Kani.

Looking For Love
Scheduled: April 27
It hasn’t been decided if this film will be any good, so don’t hold us responsible if it sucks. Celeste Ntuli heads this new local comedy. She plays a 38-year-old who is, yep, looking for love! We’ve seen the trailer and it’s insanely funny, so here’s hoping this is local box office gold.

Ocean’s 8
Scheduled: June 8
An Ocean’s 11 sequel featuring a female cast? Yes, please. This slick crime thriller will star some of the most badass women in the business, including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Anne Hathaway and Mindy Kaling!

Moja Love's drug-busting show, Sizokuthola, is back in hot water after its presenter, Xolani Maphanga's assault charges of an elderly woman suspected of dealing in drugs upgraded to attempted murder. In 2023, his predecessor, Xolani Khumalo, was nabbed for the alleged murder of a suspected drug dealer. What's your take on this?
