Not much was known about Bell Pottinger until the name rocketed to familiarity for South Africans in 2017, after reports that the infamous London-based PR firm had helped craft a disinformation campaign to stir up racial tension during the state capture era of former president Jacob Zuma.

Arguably, the term “white monopoly capital” entered our lexicon thanks to the powerhouse firm’s campaign of, according to a New York Times article, “pushing a highly toxic narrative, namely that whites in South Africa had seized resources and wealth while they deprived blacks of education and jobs”.
