Volkswagen South Africa's exciting two-day music and lifestyle festival, VW VIVOnation returned to Joburg this year and set the bar quite high with its hot line up of performers.
The Festival took place on 6 and 7 April and artists such as AKA, Sho Madjozi, Shane Eagle, Busiswa, DJ Maphorisa, Rouge, DJ Kent, Sjava and Mlindo took over The Container Yard in downtown Johannesburg for an incredible weekend.
Upon arrival your attention is immediately captured by hundreds of the towering shipping containers placed around the yard; it easily felt like you were walking into a cool music video.
The yard houses thousands of containers, over a 100 of which had to be rearranged to create the unique festival layout and experience. Pleasant aromas and sounds of meat sizzling at nearby food stands filled the air as we made our way towards the stage. A beach bar, drinks stalls and a few lifestyle pop-up shops also decorated the pathways around the yard.
The vibe was undeniably electric and showcased the best in South African music, street art, fashion, food. An even more unique feature at the festival was the autocross track and the captivating car and light displays.
AKA, one of the country’s biggest names in the music industry headlined both days and had the crowd in the palm of his hands throughout his entire set. The rapper, who’s also currently on busy with the Megacy Over Everything Tour, was an excellent pick to end off the weekend and he showed just why his shows are always incomparable.
Other standout performers, who we saw on the Sunday, were Busiswa, Sjava and Sho Madjozi. Naturally the biggest crowd-pullers when it comes to live performances, they left us wanting more at the end of their sets.
In between enjoying the music, fans got to relish in the exhilarating rides around the Vivo autocross track and sing their hearts out to win a road trip in the Vivo lip sync competition.
At last year’s VW VIVOnation festival, VW launched the Polo Vivo which was the number one selling passenger car model in South Africa in 2018.
“VW VIVOnation 2018 was a massive success, from the pre-launch awareness to the launch event itself. Not only did it help drive sales for the new Polo Vivo, it reinvigorated the love for Volkswagen and the Polo Vivo brands,” Martina Biene, head of the Volkswagen brand said.
“We are excited to be bringing fans of the brand another incredible VW VIVOnation, which also scooped a 2018 Loeries finalist nod for its innovation – and we plan to top that at this year’s festival.”
VW can proudly cross that off their to-do list as the festival was more than a success. Believe the VIVOnation hype!
