With the private use of marijuana now officially decriminalised in South Africa, a flood of dagga products have entered the market. It’s great for our economy and presents plenty of opportunities for the people. Durban Poison Cannabis Lager landed on our desks last week and we did the hard work of sampling it.

Give me the real bottle

I’m not really doing the beer thing as much as I used to, but weed beer had me interested. Unfortunately, besides a slight taste of Mary Jane the beer doesn’t make you high. I’m sure that would be risky, a beer that is also THC based, but I’m almost sure the people at Durban Poison would have made at least one of those. So send me that bottle and we can talk. – Phumlani S Langa

Light and refreshing

I cracked one open after a hard day at work and savoured how light and easy to drink it was. The lager is a bit pricey, but this is definitely one of those “conversation-starter” beers. Pull these out at a party or braai and everyone will ask you about it. – Grethe Kemp

Cashing in on the fad
. - - - -
The decriminilisation of weed for personal consumption has sparked a wave of innovation – and brewers are quick to tap in. Durban Poison is one such wannabe beer – flavoured (the creators claim) with the taste of ganja. Well, sad to say, it came across more as Durban swill – a watered down home brew with bubbles. My verdict: um, not today. If you want to make beer then make real beer. Gabriel Seeber

Moja Love's drug-busting show, Sizokuthola, is back in hot water after its presenter, Xolani Maphanga's assault charges of an elderly woman suspected of dealing in drugs upgraded to attempted murder. In 2023, his predecessor, Xolani Khumalo, was nabbed for the alleged murder of a suspected drug dealer. What's your take on this?
