Not only can you smoke weed but now you can eat a CBD pizza and enjoy the goodness of marijuana without getting high...or so they say. Phumlani S Langa grabs a slice at Col'Cacchio.

The curiosity around dagga use is growing, along with the anticipation around legislation which will hopefully decriminalise dagga use once the powers that be figure out how to charge us properly. In the meantime, brands are exploring the grey area, trying to position themselves well, ahead of this day.

Col’Cacchio claims to have the first South African CBD pizza, and they invited a few media types to give it a try. Now, the CBD is the component in dagga associated with its medicinal aspects. It can increase your focus and provide a calming feeling, but you won’t get lifted in the sense of sparking a joint with the all too essential THC chemical, which is what gets you high.

It’s no secret, I blaze those trees up and so, naturally, I was sent to this gig. The pizza was delicious, but the secret doesn’t lie in any complex recipe. What they do is prepare a normal pizza in an oven, you know, traditional methods. Once this is done, they apply the delightful Everyday CBD Spray, which gives your meal that special edge. Apparently, the heat of the pizza oven could break down the carefully balanced composition of the CBD spray, which is why it is added after the cooking.

You can add this spray to pretty much anything.

Owner Roz Mommsen explains: “The base is actually coconut oil, which you might be able to pick up. Other than that, it’s flavourless and of course there is no THC. It’s not going to make you high or have any other effects like that. The CBD helps with a sense of wellness, retaining information and brings calmness.”

Nevertheless, the mood at the table was noticeably altered after the pizzas were consumed. There was a calmness and everyone was beaming.

As a seasoned smoker, I was feeling way more than calm, as was everyone else, who jumped at the chance to have some CBD sprayed on desserts that were brought out to cap off the afternoon. An uplifting lunch to say the least. The pizzas were delicious, but we all left thinking about getting our hands on that spray, which retails for R1 195 from Africanpure.co. I’d try it again, but am holding thumbs for a THC version of this pizza … once the heat dies down.

Moja Love's drug-busting show, Sizokuthola, is back in hot water after its presenter, Xolani Maphanga's assault charges of an elderly woman suspected of dealing in drugs upgraded to attempted murder. In 2023, his predecessor, Xolani Khumalo, was nabbed for the alleged murder of a suspected drug dealer. What's your take on this?
