Close your eyes and imagine the taste of Durban... I bet it was a burning hot bunny chow that came to mind.

eThekwini’s signature dish was celebrated recently at the 2018 Durban Coca Cola Bunny Chow Barometer Challenge. The finals of this hotly contested culinary competition took place at the city’s stylish Blue Lagoon leisure resort.

For the 14th year in a row the venue was abuzz with thousands of curry lovers who converged to eat, drink and be merry.

Prior to the weekend cookoff the judges, including multi-award winning epicurean entrepreneur Xanthos Giannakopoulos, had whittled hundreds of entrants down to 10 finalists who then fought it out with flavour.

Competition was fierce but ultimately the luscious lamb and bean bunnies made by Chef Kevindren Pillay and his team from the Suncoast Hotel’s Jeera restaurant were judged to be the best.

The victorious chef observed that “the vibe and energy were electrifying and it was a fantastic team effort. Our secret spices, authentic blends and four months of non-stop hard work trying to perfect the winning recipe have all paid off. I’m so excited and happy.”

Northdene’s The Curry O’s placed second and Durban’s North Beach Café third.

So, what are you waiting for? Durban’s best bunny is calling your name…

Moja Love's drug-busting show, Sizokuthola, is back in hot water after its presenter, Xolani Maphanga's assault charges of an elderly woman suspected of dealing in drugs upgraded to attempted murder. In 2023, his predecessor, Xolani Khumalo, was nabbed for the alleged murder of a suspected drug dealer. What's your take on this?
