Every week, #Trending reviews one of the movies that came out the previous Friday. If there’s something local on offer, it will get top priority, as it should.

This week there were no local films coming out. Instead, there’s another sequel from the Predator franchise, imaginatively called The Predator; a critically bashed financial thriller called Billionaire Boys Club, co-starring sexual harasser Kevin Spacey; and an incredibly dreary-looking romance called Submergence, starring the woman who plays Lara Croft in Tomb Raider. Sure, animation Sgt. Stubby (about a wartime dog hero) looks pretty cute, but we’re not going to review any of them.

Firstly, if you’re looking for an international film review, there are hundreds of publications and websites that have them. Secondly, Hollywood doesn’t need our precious print space to advertise their movies – they have enough money to do that themselves. And thirdly, we’d rather use this space to talk about the local films that deserve your hard-earned money.

Last week’s release, Ellen, the true story of a Cape Flats mother who murdered her tik-addicted son, is in cinemas and deserves your support. Not only does your money keep our local talent employed, but it’s a brilliant cinematic experience about a very real issue. If Ellen is too daunting for you, the lighthearted Looking for Love starring Celeste Ntuli is sure to get you laughing. Not keen for the cinema? ShowMax has Noem My Skollie on offer – among South Africa’s most critically acclaimed recent films. Don’t have ShowMax? DStv BoxOffice has Five Fingers for Marseilles, and on Friday at 9.30pm gritty Joburg drama Vaya is on 1Magic (DStv channel 103).

Next week we’ll have a review for you again. But we just thought this week, for once, we’d use local space to push local film. Because really, our people deserve it.
