The 2017 Red Bull BC One final in Amsterdam was an event that bested itself each day. Every qualifying stage and subsequent breaking battles left everyone oohing and aahing, with each power move or windmill producing a roar of excited shouts and gasps.
And this year’s competition will be no different. With the world’s biggest 1-1 breakdancing competition returning to South Africa this week, breakdancers from across the country will be competing in four qualifiers with the aim of making it to the Red Bull South Africa Cypher in Cape Town in May. The winner of this event will be crowned South Africa’s best B-Boy and will get a chance to show off their skills at the 2018 world finals in Switzerland later this year.
Last year’s South African winner B-Boy Meaty, who represented South Africa in Amsterdam last year, described the event as an inspiration and “something that can not be described. Seeing these dancers on video or TV is something completely different to seeing them live. It was definitely the highlight of my career.”
Considered as one of hip-hop’s four pillars, break dancing is the athletic art of interpreting music laid down by the DJ and transforming that into exciting and exhilarating street-style dance moves.
The South African qualifiers begin their journey in Johannesburg tomorrow February 17 at AND club while the Cape Town leg takes place the next day (February 18) at The Rhythm Factory. The qualifiers then move to the eastern part of the country where Shag High Voltage plays host to Port Elizabeth’s cypher on February 24. Durban takes the baton for the last leg of the qualifiers as the aptly named The Beat Room will host the last round of qualification. The country’s best B-Boys will then battle it out Cape Town on May 12.
The BC One competition has grown to become one of the largest breakdancing competitions in the world since it first started in 2004. South Africa hosted the World Finals in 2007 with Johannesburg being privileged to witness the worlds best breakers.
This is a must for all hip-hop heads and dancers alike, especially considering the huge amount of talent on display.
