Everything that the Mzansi Youth Choir touches turns to melodic gold and Major Lazer seems to agree.
The internationally acclaimed choir created a stunning cover of Major Lazer’s Can’t Take It From Me.
The electro dance music trio loved the cover so much that they went on to repost it to their 10 million followers resulting in it going instantaneously viral within a couple of hours of release.
Major Lazer are a multi-genre trinity that have brought us timeless smash hits such as Lean On and Particula.
They have collaborated with prominent music icons like Pharell Williams, Snoop Dogg, Ariana Grande, and Travis Scott.
Can’t Take It From Me, released in May, features Jamaican singer-songwriter Skip Marley, the grandson of the late reggae icon Bob Marley.
Babalwa Maqungo, the head chorister of the choir, explained that the youth wanted to pay tribute to the elders of Soweto and the cover enabled them to do so.
“The lyrics of the single easily resonate with us South Africans and its verses build up tension towards an incredible chorus, which we felt had to be performed in our distinctively South African sound, Isicatha-Clap – a blend of isicathamiya from KwaZulu-Natal and clap-and-tap from Limpopo,” said Maqungo, thus merging the northern and eastern styles of South Africa.
Maqungo said that the support they received from Major Lazer was a pleasant surprise and that it will be really interesting to see what comes of it.
“The sky is the limit,” she added.
