BOOK LAUNCH
This week saw the launch of the highly anticipated book from Letshego Zulu, I Choose to Live: Life After Losing Gugu, with almost 400 people in attendance at the Exclusive Books store in Sandton City. The late motor racing legend, who passed away in 2016 while he and his wife, Letshego, were summitting Mount Kilimanjaro, as part of a Trek4Mandela expedition to raise funds for sanitary pads for school girls, is celebrated by Letshego in her memoir, in which she writes candidly about their relationship and the bond they shared.
She shares poignant details about the gruelling summit attempt, which ended in tragedy after Gugu experienced respiratory problems, resulting in his untimely death. It is estimated that 10 climbers who attempt the summit die every year.
In 2017, Letshego returned to the mountain she had summitted, to honour her late husband. At this week’s book launch, she spoke about the support she received from her inner circle and how she was told to “tone down as a Zulu wife”.
On Wednesday, Exclusive Books will mark the launch of its new store at Mall of Africa with Letshego in conversation with Karabo Kgoleng at 6pm. And on Thursday, Exclusive Books Killarney will host a coffee morning with Letshego, where she will continue to discuss her book.

BlackBird Books, in partnership with Bridge Books, will be hosting a Black Girls in Literature event on Saturday, August 10 at 11am.
In celebration of Women’s Month, a number of acclaimed authors will be in attendance, including Nozizwe Cynthia Jele (Happiness is a Four-Letter Word), Dudu-Busani Dube (Zulu Wedding), Lerato Mogoatlhe (Vagabond: Wandering Through Africa on Faith), Makanaka Mavengere-Munsaka (Perfect imperfections) and Keletso Mopai (Monkeys).
The event promises to be a day of literary pleasure, presenting author readings, discussions and book signings. There will be live music and award-winning actress Renate Stuurman will deliver a special reading.
