One of the enduring images of the lockdown is that of snaking queues of people waiting for food parcels.
Week in and week out, you see thousands lining up in townships and informal settlements across South Africa. Their faces speak of pain and hope. The pain of having gone without food for days and the hope that this will be the day they will be able to line their stomachs with something. Where the next meal after this food parcel will come from is not even on their minds – it is today they are concerned about.
To corrupt the lyrics of reggae great Peter Tosh’s Pick Myself Up, they stand “in the midday sun/ And wondering where my meal’s coming from/ After working so hard/ Not even a piece of bread at the yard.”
