Fifty years old and still going strong!

House number 8414 on Sentsho Street in Phefeni, Orlando West, is where it all started, and it was fitting for Kaizer Chiefs to trace their roots this week as they celebrated their 50th anniversary.

It was on January 7 1970 that Kaizer Motaung established what went on to become one the best and most professionally run football clubs in the country.

Motaung had a humble beginning, but, through hard work, sacrifices, dedication and discipline, the club went on to achieve success and become Amakhosi.

Credit must go to Motaung for his vision and leadership, which has put local football on the world stage. Today, Chiefs is one of the most followed clubs in the country.

“Turning 50 is a remarkable landmark for us as Kaizer Chiefs. We have worked tirelessly through the years to make the club the institution it is today. The new jersey pays tribute to the club’s strong heritage and rich history. We truly stand on the shoulders of giants, as our chairperson always says, and we look forward to celebrating this year and this milestone with the club’s supporters,” the club said.

While the Glamour Boys, as they are affectionately known, enjoyed much success in the 1980s and 1990s, they have found the new millennium challenging, with few titles won.

Nevertheless, Motaung can look back with pride and satisfaction, knowing that what started as a mere dream went on to generate excitement and entertainment among many South Africans.

He has set an example among his peers – other club bosses – by building an empire and running a successful club.

Congratulations, Mr Motaung, and happy birthday to Kaizer Chiefs!
