Bafana Bafana must go out and have a blast at this year’s Afcon, which starts in Egypt on Friday.
It’s been a long time since the South African senior men’s national team gave this country’s citizens something to crow about.
That the nation is imbued with football talent is not in question, but the national football team has managed to disappoint at most continental and global events.
Now that they have at least scaled the hurdle of qualifying, it is high time that our boys went out there and showed the other 23 African nations a thing or two.
The Zimbabwean Warriors, whose majority of players ply their trade in Mzansi, must also produce a good showing after making it in two successive qualifications in a row (2017and 2019).
If not for the 56.7 million South Africans and 16.5 million Zimbabweans, the two teams must do it for popular Bloemfontein Celtic supporter Botha Msila and his Zimbabwean counterpart, Alvin “Aluva” Zhakata, who are hitchhiking from the southern tip of the continent to the land of the Pharaohs.
This past week the pair risked everything as they trekked from Cape to Cairo – at least in Msila’s case who hooked up with Zhakata in Zambia – just to be in Egypt and experience the biennial continental football festival.
Should the team adopt Msila’s never-say-die attitude that says nothing is impossible, maybe, just maybe, they might spring a pleasant surprise for the nation.
It has been proved time and again that in sport anything is possible, more especially with a positive mind-set.
We join the nation in saying Go Bafana Bafana, go.
