Exactly a year ago today, the world’s eyes were fixed on Loftus Versveld stadium in the country’s capital to witness the inauguration of Cyril Ramaphosa as president of the sixth administration.

Not only was this auspicious occasion a good sight to behold as South Africa made history on the day with its first black woman combat fighter pilot, Major Mandisa Mfeka, flying as part of the Hawk formation display over the stadium – nor was it due to the mooted savings with the change of venue from the usual Unions Buildings to a stadium – it was one to behold because, it was a moment of great promise for the nation as President Ramaphosa had delivered one of his best speeches ever so far.

His speech was not only hope filling, he spoke like a prophet foreseeing Covid-19 – his message littered with key words and phrases like “solidarity; let us mobilise our every resource and summon our every capability; let us build a society that values and protects the vulnerable…”
