Voices: Mondli Makhanya, Nomboniso Gasa and Thuli Madonsela write for us

accreditation

In Voices this week, Mondli Makhanya reflects on the reign of bumbling fools in the week Mzwanele Manyi appeared at the Zondo Commission and Jacob Zuma reappeared in court in KwaZulu-Natal.

Nomboniso Gasa invokes the Mirabel Sisters, who resisted rape and patriarchy, as she reflects on the Economic Freedom Fighters’ sustained attack on women. “Words have power. [Julius] Malema knows this and he chooses his words carefully for their effect. The language of violence is no less violent simply because it has been dressed in radical sounding demagoguery.”

Thuli Madonsela writes about the compassion of adoption in a country where upwards of 3500 babies are abandoned each year. “While adoption was originally conceived as a gap filler for those unable to have biological children, it has now become a response, beyond infertility challenges, to find homes for children.”

Meanwhile, Solani Ngobeni wonders - how much is a minister worth? “Whenever the ANC converge, you could simply liken such a gathering to a ‘crime scene’, or simply another planning session for the next heist.”

Moja Love's drug-busting show, Sizokuthola, is back in hot water after its presenter, Xolani Maphanga's assault charges of an elderly woman suspected of dealing in drugs upgraded to attempted murder. In 2023, his predecessor, Xolani Khumalo, was nabbed for the alleged murder of a suspected drug dealer. What's your take on this?
