Why was Nene sacked? Selfishness, SAA, nuclear deal say parties

As the country comes to grips with President Jacob Zuma’s announcement last night that he was sacking finance minister Nhlanhla Nene, and replacing him with a man few people had heard of, the reception from political parties wasn’t exactly welcoming.

From the ANC “noting and respecting” the decision, to the EFF and DA’s slamming of Zuma as putting himself first, the responses were largely critical of the president’s decision to fire Nene. This is what they had to say:

ANC

The African National Congress notes and respects the decision of Zuma to appoint the minister of finance, David van Rooyen to replace the former minister of finance.

We accordingly commend Nene for the excellent service he has rendered to the department and the people of South Africa.

The former minister of finance remains a valuable resource in the organisation.

The president has exercised his constitutional prerogative to appoint a new minister, whom we believe has what it takes to lead the ministry.

DA

President Zuma’s announcement of firing Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene is a reckless and a dangerous move that further damages our country’s economy.

This drastic move of action with no reason concludes yet again how President Zuma puts himself first and the country second.

President Zuma has made one thing very clear tonight: if you stand in my way as finance minister and seek to introduce fiscal prudence, you will find yourself redeployed and cast aside.

EFF

A declaration of crisis indeed, his party must now remove him. #ZumaMustFall. This piece-mental Cabinet reshuffle by Jacob Zuma is a sign of serious pathological crisis in the leadership and direction for the country.

Zuma has appointed Van Rooyen because he knows he will not stand up to him when he wants to do wrong things. Van Rooyen will be so eternally grateful, absolutely starstruck that anything Zuma asks for will go.

Nene was reluctant to approve the country’s nuclear deal which Zuma wanted expedited so he could benefit before his term as president ends.

There can be no more shocking news coming out of South Africa to signify that we were a country in crisis, with no knowledge of what tomorrow holds.

UDM

Zuma’s relationship with South African Airways chairperson Dudu Myeni had a role to play.

We know Nene was dressed down by this lady in an ANC study group for refusing to bail her out.

It is the same morally challenged leadership that wanted to roll out a nuclear programme that Nene did not condone.
