A 52-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the leaking of the second matric maths exam paper.
On November 1, the basic education department confirmed that the paper was leaked on October 31 to matric students at Giyani High School in Limpopo and that an investigation was under way.
Mathanzima Mweli, the director-general of the basic education department, was left “disappointed” and urged members of the community to come forward with any information relating to the case, which was being investigated by the Hawks.
Today the Hawks and the department said that they had a “major breakthrough” in the case after the suspect handed himself over to the Giyani Police Station yesterday afternoon. He was expected to appear in court today to face charges that included theft.
“The speedy work of the Hawks in this case is extremely commendable and demonstrates the seriousness of this crime that seeks to undermine the integrity of an examination process that affects the lives and futures of over 700 000 young people,” the department said.
According to the department the full extent of the leak will be determined by Friday and pupils who have been implicated in the use of the leaked exam papers will have to rewrite the paper.
