City Power says residents will not experience disturbances in power supply after the City of Johannesburg temporarily shut down the utility’s main warehouse in Booysens, Johannesburg.

This comes after an employee tested positive for the Covid-19 coronavirus.

The warehouse will be closed for 72 hours to allow for decontamination to take place.

The employee who tested positive is currently in self-isolation at home and workers who have had contact have been advised to do the same for the next 14 days.

Stan Itshegetseng, the deputy director of communications at the environment and infrastructure services department, assured residents that services will not be hindered.

I cannot overemphasise how important it is for everyone to familiarise themselves with the symptoms associated with Covid-19 and to remain at home if you show any signs of a fever, cough, shortness of breath or sore throat.

“We have always been at the forefront of service delivery. Residents need water, waste removal and electricity.

“But we have an obligation to ensure that our workers are protected, which is why we have doctors and nurses who regularly ensure that we adhere to health and hygiene standards,” he told City Press.

“We have ensured that entities are providing workers with personal protective equipment and ensuring that our trucks are sanitised, among others.”

The City said it had support from Premier David Makhura and the national health department, and would work together with the National Institute of Communicable Diseases in contact tracing.

MMC for environment and infrastructure services, Mpho Moerane, also paid tribute to essential workers across the city.

“I cannot overemphasise how important it is for everyone to familiarise themselves with the symptoms associated with Covid-19 and to remain at home if you show any signs of a fever, cough, shortness of breath or sore throat.

“We simply cannot afford to relax any precautionary measures in fighting the spread of the virus. We still have a long way to go,” he said.

551 of Gauteng’s 909 confirmed Covid-19 cases are in the Johannesburg region.

The province has also reported four deaths and 399 recoveries.
