The Education Labour Relations Council has pledged R1.5 million to the Solidarity Fund.

The organisation, the bargaining council serving public education, said it was standing in unison with all South Africans by pledging money to the fund, which the government set up to help fight the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.

“The cash donation will help in the economic recovery, particularly for sectors that are in distress,” the council said on Saturday.

The council represents the basic education department; the SA Democratic Teachers’ Union and the combined teacher unions – the National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of SA and the Suid-Afrikaanse Onderwysersunie; the National Teachers’ Union; the Professional Educators’ Union; the Public Servants Association of SA; and the Health and Other Services Personnel Trade Union of SA.

Spokesperson Bernice Loxton said: “The contributions are from parties to the council [the basic education department representing the employers and the unions representing teachers].”
