The Gauteng Department of Education has apologised profusely for the collapse of its school admissions website on Monday.

Addressing a press conference in the Johannesburg city centre today, Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said the system failed to cope with the demand and collapsed after experiencing about 600 hits per second.

“We had anticipated that it would only be Gauteng-based parents who would load their details online in anticipation of the admission applications process which kicks off next Tuesday,” he said.

For now, said Lesufi, parents or guardians were not submitting their admission requests as yet. “They were just loading their particulars online in anticipation for next week. But the system was overloaded and it collapsed. But our team has worked tirelessly to capacitate the system. When the applications process opens up next week, we will be able to cope with whatever number of hits.”

Lesufi also announced the cancellation of the pre-admissions process.

“Parents who already have their details on the system need not worry. Equally, those who don’t should not load their details on the system. They can just apply when the process kicks off next week.”

The admissions process, he said, will close at the end of June.
