Security will not hesitate to remove anyone displaying insulting or divisive regalia when the ANC launches its election manifesto tomorrow in Durban.

Secretary-general Ace Magashule told journalists today at a state-of-readiness press conference that no ill-discipline would be tolerated from party supporters at Moses Mabhida Stadium tomorrow.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will also be delivering the January 8 statement, the second during his tenure as ANC president.

“T-shirts or placards that are insulting or divisive will not be allowed,” Magashule said.

The party will be hoping that Ramaphosa will not be humiliated in former president Jacob Zuma’s home province, where he is still wildly popular.

Zuma has continued to attract crowds of thousands of people at court over the past year, where he has been appearing on charges of fraud, corruption and racketeering related to the infamous arms deal involving French company Thales.

Speaking to supporters on Tuesday in Inanda outside Durban, Ramaphosa was forced to do a delicate balancing act as he heaped praise on Zuma, who received warm cheers throughout the event.

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal is also rebuilding following a period of intense factionalism that led to its historical kingmaker status at the party’s elective conference in December 2017.

Deputy President David Mabuza will also hope to be welcomed with open arms despite being seen as a traitor by some in KwaZulu-Natal after switching allegiance at the eleventh hour from Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma (KwaZulu-Natal’s pick to succeed Zuma) to Ramaphosa at the 2017 conference.

Magashule said that Zuma had confirmed his attendance at tomorrow’s event, as had former secretary-general and caretaker president Kgalema Motlanthe.

Former president Thabo Mbeki again informed the party that he had other engagements and would not be attending.
