DA leader Mmusi Maimane has reiterated the call for South Africans to vote for his party even if they are not members.
“You don’t even have to be a member – you just have to employ the DA as a government for the next five years,” he said.
“I am positive and glad that elections can go on today; there has been no violence or intimidation. We are saying this is an opportunity to be a historic election.”
Speaking alongside DA Tshwane mayoral candidate Solly Msimanga this morning at Captial Park Primary school, Maimane said that he felt his party had a “great opportunity in Tshwane”.
“I would like to be a part of this moment, it is a historic moment. I am here with ntate Solly Msimanga who I believe will make a fantastic mayor in the City of Tshwane. He will create an economy that will grow, create work; a city that delivers basic services, and ultimately a city that cuts corruption. Therefore I am coming to put shoulder to the wheel with him; I am saying I support you. Your success is our success, it is the success of the people of this country.”
Earlier in the day, Maimane accompanied Joburg mayoral candidate Herman Mashaba when he cast his vote. He will now jet off to Nelson Mandela Bay to be with the DA’s mayoral candidate of that metro, Athol Trollip.
Msimanga said that today was a chance for South Africans to stand up and be the change that they would like to see.
“There is no house in this city that hasn’t heard from the DA. It comes down to the choice that people will have and exercise today. That is the beauty of democracy, that you have an opportunity to employ a government and you have an opportunity to fire them if you are not happy. So today people will have a choice to endorse what has been happening, or if they want a new era that will deliver jobs and create opportunities and ensure there is an accountable government,” Msimanga said.
He also condemned those that chose to stay away from the polls because they were angry with a particular party, saying that people lost their lives for the freedom to vote and people should exercise that right.
