Despite regulations preventing most people from leaving their homes except to procure essential goods and services, South Africans defied the rules of the nationwide lockdown put in place to curb the spread the Covid-19 coronavirus.

Photographer Tebogo Letsie captured Day 28 of the lockdown as members of the army and police patrolled the streets of Soweto.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Thursday that the lockdown regulations would be reduced to level four measures from May 1. He deployed 70 000 additional soldiers to help enforce the relaxed measures.

Many took to social media to criticise the party, with former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela expressing disappointment, saying the DA could have used other ways to send its message.
