SA Mint managing director Tumi Tsehlo will climb Mount Kilimanjaro in a bid to raise funds for the Caring4Girls initiative

An epic adventure to climb more than 5 000m up Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, is being undertaken by SA Mint to raise funds and create awareness for the Caring4Girls initiative.

The fourth Trek4Mandela expedition has been carefully planned so that the climbers will reach Kilimanjaro’s Uhuru Peak on July 18, in celebration of Mandela Day.

Founded in 2012, Caring4Girls is dedicated to helping schoolgirls who are forced to stay at home because they cannot afford sanitary wear for menstruation. These girls miss up to 50 days of school a year.

Caring4Girls aims to support at least 350 000 girls this year with sanitary pads, which will restore their dignity and freedom, and make them feel empowered.

Joining the expedition will be SA Mint’s managing director Tumi Tsehlo, and Gawie Herholdt, the company’s organisational effectiveness executive.

This year, in addition to contributing the participation fee, SA Mint has set itself the target of raising R500 000 towards this initiative.

“We have set ourselves a big target, but I am confident that, with the public’s support, we can raise the funds needed for Caring4Girls,” said Tsehlo.

To support the initiative, members of the public are encouraged to send an SMS with the keyword SAMint to 42513 and pledge R30. Terms and conditions apply. – Staff reporter

The DA recently released a controversial election ad in which the national flag is consumed by flames. Many took to social media to criticise the party, with former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela expressing disappointment, saying the DA could have used other ways to send its message. Do you think the DA took it too far with this ad?
