The DA: All the numbers you need to know

As the deadline approaches for political parties to submit names of their nominated candidates for the August 3 local government elections, the Democratic Alliance today announced that for the first time ever, it will field candidates in all the wards.

We give you 10 interesting numbers about the party and its candidates:

1. The DA will contest elections in all 259 municipalities in South Africa.

2. It will submit candidates for all 4392 wards that are being contested.

3. The party received 8299 applications for aspirant candidates, who went through the DA candidate selection process.

4. The party received 550 appeals from unsatisfied potential candidates.

5. The party has announced 44 mayoral candidates for the municipalities where it says it has a realistic chance of winning.

6. Of the 44 mayoral candidates, seven will run for the mayoral chain in seven metropolitan municipalities.

7. 14 of those 44 mayoral candidates are women.

8. Nine of them are returning mayors

9. Three were deputy mayors but will now contest the top position

10. More than 800 candidates went through the party’s “potential candidates’ programme”, which equips members to become better candidates.
