Novelist, academic, broadcaster and journalist are some of the titles the multi-talented Dr Nokuthula Mazibuko-Msimang has embraced in her career.
The writer joins Fred Khumalo at the City Press studio to dive into her literary journey, which features seven children’s books – including the most recent release Soweto Tea Party – and her first adult novel titled The Daughters of Nandi.
She was earlier this month bestowed the Chairperson’s Award at the 2022 South African Literature Awards in recognition of her body of work over the past 30 years.

Mazibuko-Msimang is currently a fellow at the University of Pretoria working on historical narratives and is on track to publish a biography on the legendary musician Dolly Rathebe in the next year.
She says of Mam’ Dolly:
Msimang just returned from the literary festival that featured some of the biggest names in African writing – the Ake Arts & Book Festival in Nigeria – and will be at the inaugural Gauteng International Book Festival on December 11 at Ubuntu Kraal, in Soweto.
“The vision is where the best African stories come alive. It is a moment in time where we will come together and talk books, what’s old, what’s classic, what’s new and what’s happening.”
