Movies:

1987: Mandela, a made-for-TV movie directed by Philip Saville, featured a screenplay by South African-born Ronald Harwood. Alfre Woodard played Winnie Madikizela-Mandela to Danny Glover’s Nelson Mandela.


1997: Mandela and De Klerk, directed by Joseph Sargent, featured TV actor Tina Lifford as Madikizela-Mandela, Sidney Poitier as Mandela and Michael Caine as FW de Klerk.


2007: Goodbye Bafana, directed by Bille August, about Mandela’s relationship with his prison warden, featured Dennis Haysbert as Mandela and Faith Ndukwana as Madikizela-Mandela. She is the only actress to play the role twice. She reprised her role in 2009’s Endgame.


2009: Endgame, directed by Pete Travis, again features Faith Ndukwana as Madikizela-Mandela. Clarke Peters is Mandela, with Chiwetel Ejiofor as Thabo Mbeki and William Hurt as Willie Esterhuyse.


2010: Mrs Mandela, directed by Michael Samuels, featured British actress Sophie Okonedo as Madikizela-Mandela and David Harewood as Mandela.


2011: Winnie Mandela, directed by South African director Darrell Roodt, courted controversy when it cast Jennifer Hudson to play Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Terrence Howard as Mandela. The film was based on the book Winnie Mandela: A Life, by Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob.


2013: Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, directed by Justin Chadwick, featured British actress Naomie Harris as Madikizela-Mandela and Idris Elba as Mandela. It was nominated for an Oscar for best original song, Ordinary Love.

2016: Mandela's Gun, directed by British director John Irvin, with a screenplay by Athos Kyriakides and Malcolm Purkey, featured local actress Zethu Dlomo as Winnie. She is also Lerato in Five Fingers for Marsailles, the local Western that opened this weekend. Tumisho Masha played Mandela is this film set in 1962.

Documentaries:

Madikizela-Mandela was interviewed for 16 documentaries from 1965 and appeared in archive footage in another 15. Here are the highlights:

  • 1965: Winnie and Nelson Mandela were interviewed in 1965 for an episode of Changing World entitled South African Essay Part 2: One Nation, Two Nationalisms.
  • 1987: Nelson Mandela: Journey to Freedom was aired as one of the first episodes in the long-running Biography series. It featured Madikizela-Mandela and Mandela.
  • 1996: Mandela, the Oscar-nominated documentary feature directed by Angus Gibson and Jo Menell, featured Madikizela-Mandela. It was created from more than 200 hours of footage and 100 hours of archive material.
  • 2002: Amandla! A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony, Lee Hirsch’s documentary of how music underscored the Liberation Struggle. It featured interviews with all the greats of South African music and featured archive footage of Madikizela-Mandela.
  • 2013: Plot for Peace, directed by Carlos Agullo and Mandy Jacobson, about the mysterious French businessman involved in Mandela’s release from prison, features an interview with Madikizela-Mandela.
  • 2013: Music for Mandela, a documentary that showcases the soundtrack of Madiba’s life. Madikizela-Mandela features in archive footage.
  • 2017: Winnie, Pascale Lamche’s award-winning documentary, which flights on eNCA on Wednesday April 11 at 9pm.
