Mr Wuuu Shem got his own reality show on Mzansi Magic, kept boosting Idols SA’s ratings as a judge and generally slayed in 2016.

The rapper walked away with two South African Music Awards and a BET Best New International Act nomination.

Yep, 2016 was the year that Emtee kept showing up on our radar and doing us proud.

Hip-hop queen Gigi Lamayne is on the rise. Not only did she release a debut album and a string of videos – including for the single, Fees Will Fall – she was also Wits University’s top third-year media studies student in 2016.

Terry Pheto

The renowned Tsotsi actress made history by being picked as the first South African actress to play struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in an upcoming six-part US miniseries called Madiba.

She also starred in the UK’s biographical romantic drama, A United Kingdom.

That performance earned her a British Independent Film Award nomination for best supporting actress.

Pearl Thusi

The actress’ star kept shining this year. She arrived on the big screen in Kalushi, shone as a host on Lip Sync Battle Africa, shot an international movie called The Blue Mauritius and rounded things off by being cast in the US crime drama Quantico.

Wizkid

The Nigerian muso was on fire this year. Apart from chart-topping numbers and featuring on Drake’s single One Dance, he was crowned artist of the year and best male artist at the 2016 MTV Africa Music Awards.

Trevor Noah

Who else would it go to? December 2015 saw him take over as TV host on the renowned US news and satire programme The Daily Show.

He has gone from being a hit to becoming a superstar.
