SuperSport United and Bafana Bafana defender Aubrey Modiba has answered the call from his community in Metz in Limpopo to assist with food parcels amid the Covid-19 coronavirus crisis and subsequent nationwide lockdown.
Modiba told City Press that he has been inundated by calls and some of those who had contacted him included peers who have been left without income for sustenance.
In his response, the 24-year-old said he had initiated a fundraising project with the support of his homeboys, his club teammate Grant Kekana and Kaizer Chiefs defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele.
“Many people from my village have been calling me to help whichever way I can and I have undertaken to contribute food parcels. The aim is to reach 100 families,” said Modiba.
He added that he would also donate as many face masks and educate people about the pandemic.

“The coronavirus crisis calls for those who are in a fortunate situation to do their bit. Obviously, this project is not something that has been budgeted for; that’s why I turned to my homeboys Grant and Rama and they are eager to assist. My agent Glyn Binkin [of Player’s Club] is also helping out.”
With the lockdown still in force, Modiba said he was hoping to secure a permit to reach his home province to make a difference in this time of need.
Two years ago, Modiba’s association with the Sports Trust and Nedbank benefited his former primary school at his birthplace, thanks to a new multi-purpose sports funded by the financial institution.
Now Modiba is hoping to live up to his nickname, “Postman”, to deliver on another promise – this time when his community needed him the most.
