Defending Absa Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns missed a chance to narrow the gap to a mere point on Kaizer Chiefs at the top of the table after a goalless draw with 10-man Bidvest Wits on Tuesday night.
Downs came to the game four points behind the log leaders and a win would have reduced the gap to a single point but they could not break down the visitors, who played more than 30 minutes with 10 men after defender Buhle Mkhwanazi received his marching orders for a second bookable offence in the 57th minute.
Games between these two sides are always a tight affair and it was no different last night as they played their second successive draw following their 1-1 draw in the first round.
Last night’s draw brought to an end Sundowns’ two-match win streak in the league following victories over Polokwane City in December and AmaZulu last weekend.
Wits also missed a chance of registering a third consecutive victory but a point was enough to take them to third spot.
At the end it was two points lost for Sundowns who were looking to pile the pressure on Amakhosi, who host Highlands Park this evening at 7.30pm.
A win for Chiefs will increase the gap to six points in the title race and give them breathing space at the top.
Elsewhere, Gabadinho Mango scored a hat-trick as Orlando Pirates easily brushed Polokwane City aside 4-1 at Peter Mokaba Stadium. Ben Motshwari scored the other goal for the Buccaneers while Mohammed Anas scored City’s consolation goal.
Bloemfontein Celtic were also victorious away at struggling Stellenbosch with a 2-1 scoreline.
