The MTN 8 final will be a repeat of last season as Cape Town City and SuperSport United battle it out for the crown on September 29.
This was after City defeated Sundowns 4-2 on penalties here today after the game ended 1-1 on aggregate.
The Cape side will now be hoping to avenge last season’s defeat at the hands of United at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
City’s victory yesterday means the MTN8 struggle continues for Sundowns who, on Tuesday, were knocked out of the CAF Champions League.
It was a thriller of a game and unfortunately there could only be one winner.
After losing the first leg 1-0 last weekend, Sundowns knew what they needed to do and they did exactly that when Tony Silva scored the most important goal – Downs’ first in five matches.
Unlike Saturday’s other semi-final between Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United, today’s game was more entertaining and competitive as both City and Sundowns played their hearts out.
Despite coming to the game with a 1-0 lead, City did not sit back and try to defend their narrow lead. Instead, the visitors were the ones asking questions as they searched for an insurance goal which would have taken the game away from Sundowns.
However, it was Sundowns who scored a goal in the first half through Silva to level the tie.
The goal meant the tie had to be decided by a penalty shoot-out after the game ended 1-0 in favour of Sundowns.
Downs missed two penalties through Silva and Anthony Laffor while City scored their four kicks through Nana Akosah-Bempah, Teko Modise, Matthew Rusike and Taariq Fielies to send Downs packing.
