If making the world a better place is what you’re aiming for, there is no better name than former president Nelson Mandela in which to do it.

To celebrate his life of goodwill and what would have been his 100th birthday on July 18, Liverpool Football Club legends Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler and John Barnes are taking a three-day tour in South Africa to promote the building of a memorial in Mandela’s honour in Liverpool.

On Tuesday night, the three joined fans and people from the sports fraternity – including radio sports presenter Thabiso Mosia, who is rumoured to be taking over the popular Metro FM sports show, and SuperSport United defender Tefu Mashamaite – for a casual night of foozball and drinks at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton.

Fans got to chat to their legends and sip on Favor energy drink, owned by infamous preacher Shepherd Bushiri.

The Nelson Mandela Memorial in Liverpool was initiated by the UK-based charity Mandela8. The memorial artwork will be created on the lake island at the Toxteth Park and be unveiled in June.

It will be known as Mandela Island and the bridge linking the island with the park will be called Freedom Bridge.

The rest of the Liverpool soccer legends’ tour included a gala dinner with fans and a coaching clinic with underprivileged children, hosted at the MetroStars Football Development Centre in Alberton, Ekurhuleni.
