I have been going to the Kruger Park for almost my entire life (which is 14 years) and have read many books to enhance my experience of the bush.

My first response to this book was excitement because this is how I know and love the park. Rautenbach’s is not your ordinary guide – it combines facts with personal experience as well as marvellous stories.

Although there is quite a bit of information about the fauna and flora in the park, I would have liked to see more references in the book to the top five animals and birds to be found in the areas around each of the rest camps.

Stuck on what food to make or take? This book has an entire section on what to eat! It also suggests what utensils, food and clothing to take, making this the perfect packing guide.

The book provides many different routes on how to get to where you’re planning to go, so you can choose which one suits you best.

It also advises on the best places for game viewing. A nice touch is the photography going back to the 1920s. However, if you are a frequent visitor you will probably already know a lot of what’s in here already, as well as what to expect and where.

The one thing everyone will find invaluable though is the booking guide, as it is essential that your bookings are done correctly to have a stress-free experience of the park.

This book can be used by everyone, but non-regular or first-time visitors can and will find it most beneficial. For the more experienced visitor, there are, of course, more advanced books out there, but anyone will find something in here to enjoy.

This is therefore a must-have for newcomers and a helpful tool for the more experienced. I really enjoyed it and reading the many stories left me in awe.
