It has been a celebrity-filled runway spectacular at African Fashion International (AFI) Joburg Fashion Week. Actress Khanyi Mbau, rapper and TV personality Nomuzi Mabena and social media influencer K Naomi were spotted with entrepreneur Babalwa Mneno, Housewives of Johannesburg cast member Brinnette Seopela and fashion influencer Maryluck Mondlani on the runway.

Designers Rich Factory, Siphosihle Masango, David Tlale and House of Jahdara’s collections stood out on Thursday and Friday night at the Sandton Convention Centre as one after the other they showcased their latest collections.

Rich Factory’s collection stood out for its inclusivity.

The models, who were recruited through Instagram by the African contemporary fashion and lifestyle brand’s founder Rina Chunga, were relatable, making it easy for audience members to see themselves in them.

Laurence Airline designs had an interesting take on stripes

The collection had an interesting combination of prints and fabrics, with a range of silhouettes that flattered different body types.

The overall feel of the collection was youthful, vibrant, real and fun.

Masango, with his incredible collection, had a powerful introduction by a praise singer and hard-hitting drum beats from timeless hits around the continent, sending chills that riveted the entire audience.

Eric Raisina’s collection was bold

His was a modern twist on traditional African ideals – showing skin, boldness with textiles, fabrics and pops of colour.

The show interrogated ways in which we consume nudity, feminity and masculinity while still retaining its Afrocentricity.

Multifaceted Nigerian womenswear brand House of Jahdara’s collection was a whimsical experience. It was a clever play on ruffles that was executed with precision, craftsmanship and impeccable tailoring.

On Thursday – the opening night – Miss SA Zozibini Tunzi, Tlale, Gavin Rajah, Anisa Mpungwe and Eric Raisina chaired the African Fashion Unites show alongside Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe. As co-chairs, they endorsed the message of unity among all Africans as well as efforts aimed at changing perceptions about the continent.

“As creatives, our designers have a strong cultural voice to drive a message of unity and to bring societies together,” said AFI founder Moloi-Motsepe.

A fashion reveller at the show

“Globally, the fashion business is a $2.4 trillion (R35 trillion) industry. African designers have a unique proposition for buyers and consumers on the continent and in the diaspora, that should translate to sales.”

Tunzi said she was happy to be a part of such an occasion, which highlighted and showcased the best of African creatives.

“At a time when cultural appropriation in fashion is being discussed globally, it is important for Africa to insist on putting its stamp on African fashion, style, design and on trends that are from this continent,” said Tunzi.
