Artist Jaden Smith, the son of actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, has not cared about your gender binaries for a loooong time.

He has often worn whatever he’s wanted, and that includes a skirt or two. Last year, he posted an Instagram of himself in a tunic dress, which he captioned: “Went To TopShop To Buy Some Girl Clothes, I Mean ‘Clothes’.”

So it’s hardly surprising that Smith has been selected to star in Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer campaign for 2016 as the face of the womenswear collection.

The announcement was made via the fashion house’s designer and creative director Nicolas Ghesquière’s Instagram account, where he posted two pictures of Jaden wearing a leather jacket and glovelets, a black-and-white fringed top, and a long black skirt.

It’s cool to see a high-end brand finally break with restrictive norms of “clothes for men and women”, and it’s great to see a carefree black youngster like Jaden be part of it.

However, it must be noted that gender-fluid/gender-blurring clothing has been around for a long time.

Louis Vuitton’s foray must be taken with a pinch of salt because it could very well be a case of just another corporate looking to cash in on what people (especially queer individuals) have been doing forever.

However, that doesn’t mean Jaden should not continue to slay!
