Advocate Dominic “ANC Bae” Khumalo and Afrikaans singer and songwriter Bobby van Jaarsveld were announced as the new Feather Awards nominees for the hunk of the year category.
The two will fight for the award with Bohang Moeko.
Khumalo is a researcher at the telecommunications and postal services.
The two have taken the places of The Queen actor Thabang Molaba and model Tumi Seeco, who were withdrawn after their alleged homophobic comments on their Twitter pages.
Yesterday Feather Awards organisers said of their decision to remove the two: “It has come to the attention of the Feather Awards that nominee for the hunk of the year category, Tumi Seeco, has sent out homophobic content on his Twitter page.
“As an event dedicated to fighting homophobia and discrimination against sexual minorities, the Feather Awards has a zero-tolerance attitude to such prejudice.
“Tumi Seeco’s nomination is withdrawn with immediate effect.”
Molaba is in hot water for a 2015 tweet.
But he has since hit back in a tweet.
“If a tweet is mine you have to find it ... under my name. Not under another person’s name.
“I don’t think you understand how messed up one has to be – mentally and emotionally – to work with people against whom you have a phobia.
“I don’t appreciate you associating me with such bad energies, honestly.
“As part of the LGBTIQ [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and questioning] community, the Feather Awards are yours; you have a voice and your voice should be heard. If you strongly vouch that I should be removed from the nominees because you feel I have violated what you stand for then I am genuinely okay with that,” Molaba tweeted.
Seeco got into trouble for his 2012 tweets: “I think that’s how you get gay children – they witness their dad getting beat by the mom.
“My son must know if he ever turns gay, he won’t have a father highly impossible though his genes won’t allow it.”
Both Molaba and Seeco could not be reached for comment and failed to respond to messages.
