Natural-hair guru Candi & Co, the renowned hair and beauty company, has released its 2019 Hair Trend Report.

Themed Candiland and featuring rapper Nadia Nakai as its celebrity guest editor, the report is inspired by and showcases bold hair trends seen at local and global music festivals, such as Coachella, Rocking the Daisies, Burning Man and AfroPunk.

Ahead of the dreary winter season, this year’s report has come just in time to brighten the mood.

“We are thrilled at the prospect of presenting this year’s hair trends, which are funky, playful, bold and really girly at the same time. We worked with a reputable and credible list of talented people in the hair and beauty industry to compile this report, which we know will give us some sure hits that our clients will love this season,” says Candice Thurston, Candi & Co’s founder and chief executive.

Candi & Co, part of the Sorbet Group, has as its focus black women and specialises in natural hair, protective styling, weaves and wigs.

As part of this year’s report, trend-setting hair and beauty influencers Lulama Wolf, Tumi Mohale, Jena Dover, Danni Bowler, Crystal Kasper, Kgosi “Krayzi” Modisane and Stella Nhantumbo were asked to showcase their looks.

“Our company is about deracialising, destigmatising and revolutionising hair and beauty notions,” Thurston said.

Nakai selected a collection of her custom-made wigs to feature in the report.

City Press asked Candi & Co what inspired the looks and for tips to create and care for them.

In the swing: This curly wig in candyfloss colours, worn by Nadia Nakai, is inspired by festive foods. THere is no need to damage your own hair with colour and it is easy to put on. Tip: Use a silver shampoo and conditioner range to ensure colours stay vibrant
Beaded beauty: THe beards on Nadia Nakai are a work of art. The best part is that they are part of the wig she is wearing, so you don't have to sit for hours putting them on. Tip: Use jewels that are not too heavy and stick to similar colours to create a theme
Light it up: Colour Highlights were created for a pop in naturalista Danni Bowler’s curls. The pop of colour adds a beautiful dimension to Danni’s perfect mane of hair. Tip: Ensure a professional colourist is used to dye your natural curls. Don’t dye your entire head and just add highlights to ensure your natural curls are looked after.
To and Fro: A fro like this one on Lulama Wolf with hair accessories gives the traditional round Afro a shape that is modern and edgy. The bigger, the better. Tip: Choose an Afro length and cut that suits the shape of your face
Locked and Loaded: Krayzi Modisane’s highlighted faux locks sport blonde highlights and a range of hair accessories, adding funk and glam to the look. Tip: Use the crochet method so that you don’t hurt your scalp
Punk Funk: Crystal Kasper’s Punk meets Festival look involves braids with highlights created by faux locks styled in a high pony with gold links. To add a bit of punk they shaved in some sidelines which created a Mohawk effect.Tip: Make sure the braids are secured in the high pony so that it does not create any stress on the hairline
