Presenter turned rapper, Boity Thulo has returned to the airwaves with a follow up song to her collaboration with Nasty C. Phumlani S Langa gives Bakae a spin.

Boity: Bakae

Available on iTunes

2 stars out of 5

I was there on the night TV personality turned rapper Boity Thulo revealed her new track at the not-so-illustrious SA Hip-Hop Awards. The beat slaps, and it’s a hype track that sees the newcomer to rap shed the Cardi B flow she used on her first single Wuz Dat for something not too different from her old man, Cassper Nyovest.

I prefer this more motswako styling – her voice sounds mad nice when she flows in her mother tongue.

The beat is good and Bakae quickly rocketed up the iTunes charts to number one, but, yet again, we have no idea who made it. I’m also not feeling these punchlines – this is what I call soft serve. I think Boity might still be trying to gauge just how explicit she can be in what she says as it would suck if she lost that Sissy Boy deal she boasts about having on this track.

I don’t like talking about singles – at this stage, I think there should be a mixtape out at the very least. It doesn’t have to be large, just five or so tracks. I want to hear that many songs by Boity back to back and then we can talk honestly. I dig this sister. At least I think I do.

Locally, we have a consumer base that leans towards artists who are blessed in the looks department and Boity has that, however, I don’t listen to rap like a f**k boy. I came up in the era when most of the rappers on MTV were rather ugly. These days, the aesthetic needs to be well manicured here and internationally. The lyrics are, at best, an afterthought.

I’m still not convinced by Boity’s efforts as this package comes across as a gimmick. She has a long way to go in my eyes and it should all start with clear decisions to increase her output and decide if she wants to fly off at the mouth like I think she can or play it safe for the sake of brand endorsements. I’ve heard rumours that Boity is the kind of woman who puts people in their place – she’s even mentioned this on Wuz Dat. So why are these bars sounding cute and all types of timid?
