The tumultuous seven-month, on-off relationship between Kelly Khumalo and Chad da Don is on fire again.
In an interview with City Press this week the two lovebirds described their chemistry as a calling – and revealed that they were in love again and have even tied the knot.
“We are not dating, we are married – dating, married, engaged – we are all those things. We will not discuss when we got married, it’s private. We are not going to share everything that goes on in our lives. We are human beings and we deserve our privacy too,” said Chad.
Kelly chipped in: “My family is so happy for me, especially my mom, because she knows the type of daughter she raised. My family were like ‘Oh God! Finally, here’s the man we’ve been waiting for.’”
The two, who earlier this year announced that they had broken up, described the cause of their initial break-up as a “spiritual attack”.
“We had our personal reasons for the break-up and it was more of a spiritual attack of people wanting to stop what God had blessed. But my korobela [love potion] was stronger than hers,” said Chad jokingly, before rubbing Kelly’s hand and explaining how they found each other.
“We met in late October last year after she had asked me to come to her video shoot, because she thought I was hot. What I saw in Kelly was the woman of God that she is, and the presence of God that she carries inside. She stands for the principles of God. I am a man of God and I felt Him in her.”
Kelly has a history of associations with celebrity figures that puts her in a less than flattering light. She has been romantically involved with the late Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa, the late business mogul Prosper Mkwaiwa and ex-convict and rapper Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye.
Asked if this newly found love was shaped by her previous relationships, Kelly did not mince her words.
“He is different from all those you have just mentioned. For me Don is very godly and very honest, and he’s very upfront about who he is and what his intentions are.
“How can one think that a guy going to prison has something to do with me? Was I doing drugs or driving the car? It’s very unfair to bring us or this beauty into that.
"Secondly, how am I responsible for people getting into the house to rob us and taking someone’s life? That has nothing to do with me or Chad,” Kelly protested before Chad interjected: “I know she never did any of those things. I love her so much that even if she did those things I would still be with her.”
Kelly responded with a laugh. “Really, babe?” and continued: “For me, you can think what you want to think. We know what we have and we are content. We didn’t do this as a publicity stunt and it would be so easy for me to walk away if it was. But I have no intention to walk away.”
The couple described their union as one that would be used to inspire others and spark conversation on how “colourless” love is.
“God is love. God has no colour. He is spirit and meeting my wife Kelly really showed that,” Chad added.
“As much as we have plans, there is so much of God’s plans for us. Even the getting together and going back was not our plan – it’s more than that, and I can’t wait to keep unpacking what He is going to do.
“God has kept pulling us back together after we had broken up. I am so in love and loved. My family has just been extended and we have a very diverse family, Chad said.
“We bring out the rainbow colours in Africa and it’s going to change a lot of perceptions in Africa,” he explained.
The couple says their new single Uzogcwala, which was released on Friday, was inspired by their break-up.
However, the pair was quick to deny that their reunion was a publicity stunt, describing it as “God’s publicity stunt” instead.
