Vikings, now in its sixth and final season, has had all its previous seasons falling between the releases of Game of Thrones. But instead of wilting under the pressure, it has kept banging away at a steady pace.
It also looks like it will reach a more well-rounded ending than Game of Thrones, which had a final season that left many viewers disappointed.
This sixth season sees Ragnar’s sons at odds with one another yet again.
His eldest, Björn Ironside, finds himself tangled in a web of love while dealing with the loss of his most cherished connections. The actor, Alexander Ludwig, was used poorly in the latest Bad Boys movie, but at least he got the bag.
They don’t, however, fully disclose what happens to the eccentric boat maker Flóki in this season. His attempt to set up a colony in the Faroe Islands failed dismally.
The lamest of Ragnar Lothbrok’s sons, Hvitserk, is haunted by the ghost of his dead lover, and thoughts of vengeance – fuelled by an addiction to alcohol – plague him throughout.
Ivar Lothbrok, who fled Norway at the end of last season’s battle of the brothers, strikes up an entertaining friendship with a leader from a foreign land, who claims to be a prophet king.
Back in Norway, a gripping episode sees an election held and a king of all Norway chosen. Lagertha Lothbrok, the world famous shield maiden, has led a long life and seen so much death.
She wants nothing more than to put her sword down and spend time with her grandchildren. Unfortunately, her life of violence won’t let her go and her trajectory this season will rattle your soul if you’re a day one fan.
Vikings has been nominated for a string of Emmy awards, in categories ranging from editing to special visual effects, but has yet to receive any. An absolute travesty
