"He had a big heart and loved peace."

This is how Peter “Mashata” Mabuse's friends described the popular DJ, comedian and MC to City Press during a musical tribute night held for the slain social media darling at the Emperors Palace in Kempton Park on Wednesday night.

Musicians, DJs and comedians came out in their numbers to pay tribute to the 46-year-old who died in a hail of bullets on Sunday morning. He had just finished a gig in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria.

Fellow DJ and close friend Duncan Mnisi shared how thankful he was to Mabuse who introduced him to the music industry four years ago. Mnisi said Mabuse not only showed him the ropes but always gave him sound advice on how to handle the pressure that came with being in the industry.

“I knew him even before I joined the industry, he was one of the guys we looked up to. I loved interacting with him and our friendship went beyond the entertainment industry. We are all saddened by his passing, we don’t think he deserved to die that way. It was brutal. I don’t think whoever did this knew what they were doing,” he said.

According to Mabuse's cousin, Lebo, who was also at the event, he was his mother's only child and had an adopted daughter.

Comedian Thabang ER, whose given name is Thabang Ramasenya, said he was in denial when he first heard the news of Mabuse's brutal murder on Sunday. He told City Press that he was flooded with calls from people asking if he had heard he tragic news, he initially thought it was "one of those fake news by social media".

Ramasenya said he kept on calling Mabuse’s phone and when it rang unanswered he was relieved. That was until it stopped ringing.

The last time I saw him he was full of life and that’s the memory I still hold of him. The news that he is no more has still not sunk in. Maybe after the burial that’s when I will come to terms with the fact that he is no more. He believed in me and the brand that I am pushing. Mashata was one person who, if you were doing a show, he would buy tickets and still perform. He was full of life, he had so much positive energy.

He said he was still trying to come to terms with how his friend died, because he did not deserve to die that way as he was a peaceful person.

Hopolang “DJ Young” Leepile said the day Mabuse died was terrible, adding that he had to stay strong and hide his emotions. But everyone there was visibly shattered.

Comedian Mashabela Galane cried uncontrollably as Mabuse’s friends got on stage to celebrate his life. The former Tshwane University of Technology staff member will be laid to rest on Sunday in Akasia, north of Pretoria.
