On Thursday, the media interacted with a few of the performers on the line-up of the Soweto International Jazz Festival at the Holiday Inn in Sandton City.
The Sky Bar at the hotel was the venue which was rather hot at first as the sun pelted through the large glass windows and the heater was on.
Apparently, being that it was so early it would have been inappropriate to serve liquor, so everyone milled about drinking coffee and scoffing canapés while staring at the fully stocked bar that loomed in the background.
Fortunately, the artists made up for that by being rather forthcoming with their comments.
Among the acts who attended the morning mixer were Gordon Chambers, Kameron Corvet and Kelly G.
Local acts who graced the stage at the mixer were Amanda Black, Nasty C and Lady Zamar.
The pre-festival gathering was hosted by organiser Nolan Baynes, who said the festival was looking to create organic collaborations between local and international musicians.
“Someone once said to me, the best way to ensure a collaboration happens is to make sure there are no managers in the room,” he said.
This seems to be the angle that organisers have taken for the first Soweto International Jazz Festival, with the hopes that artists will link up with each other naturally and craft long-lasting music.
We are glad that the festival is actually happening as it was cancelled last year owing to a few partners pulling out. We will be tracking the output of what follows these sentiments, as international collaborations are often spoken about but very seldom realised.
