The Schwarma Co. in Norwood has been thriving for years now and not without good reason. Phumlani S Langa samples the skill in staying power.

The Schwarma Co

71 Grant Avenue, Norwood

. . . . -

For 21 years, The Schwarma Co in Norwood has been pleasing palates with its double-edged approach to culinary supremacy: good food that’s also affordable.

This spot is easily one of the best eateries in Jozi. A lot of places come and go. Some arrive with force and hype, but lack staying power.

This three-tiered eatery has fine water jets fitted to the balcony railings. The meat is prepared at a hidden floor under the main levels. Their décor is warm: simple wooden seating, vinyl wood floors and a relaxed feel; here you could carry out a successful date or a bite with your buddies.

The restaurant has maintained high-quality standards in their food for the past two decades and does not franchise.

If you haven’t visited this joint, I pity you for all the goodness you’ve missed out on. Their beef (R90), chicken (R90), falafel (R80) and lamb (R100) options go with over 30 fresh salads that you can choose from, guaranteeing a fresh and crisp taste each time. You also have the choice of wrapping all that goodness in a pita or laffa. Their meat options are a personal preference of mine, along with their halloumi, which tastes authentic; something I can’t say about many restaurateurs out there, serving bootleg rubbery stuff. We see you.

When you walk into this establishment, you are immediately shown to a table, and your drinks order is taken promptly. Afterwards, the waiter will take the order for your preferred protein. Then you’re invited over to the salad bar to choose the fillings you would like, from hummus to chilli, tomatoes, brinjals and everything in between.

The service here is top notch. “We keep our customers very satisfied. We love what we do and it reflects through our work,” says Marwan Shabne in his Arabic accent. He co-owns this establishment with his brother, Wafi, and explains how the main focus for them and their team is to make sure that every client who eats in their restaurant leaves feeling happy.

“Good honest food at good prices, our cosy atmosphere and our skewered meat is what keeps people coming back. We are famous for our beef ribs (R230), deboned chicken, and, of course, our schwarmas. We offer a fusion of Mediterranean flavours, balanced with local ones.”

Beyond their marvellous meat selection they also have a wide range of delicious vegetarian and gluten-free dishes.
