Word around town is that there’s a new chip in town. And it’s not just any old chip, it’s a chip that slaps. Once I heard this new fast food spot was in my hood of Kensington, I had to try it out.

The Tjips bar is just off centre in the food court and it wasn’t that busy on a Tuesday morning, but I imagine things get lit on weekends.

I slide up on the homie Benjamin behind the counter. He talks me through the selections. You can add toppings such as jalapeños, guac, sour cream and salsa or order the Il Continentale – parmesan chips with black truffle mayo (R100).

He recommends the staple and flagship serving: Straight chips with Tjips’ Famous Cheese Sauce, which costs only R27.

Tjips has been open since February. You can get full-on meals here too, such as The Joburger, which is a burger patty layered on top of some slap chips, doused with cheese sauce, jalapeños, tomato and lettuce (R79).

Tjips also offers chips with pulled chicken and sesame slaw (R79) and dessert in the form of a fairly extensive ice cream bar or sweet-style chips with a scoop of Paul’s ice cream on top.

I enjoyed the thick cut of the chips – I didn’t have the largest portion on the menu as I’m not one for breakfast, but this left me feeling quite full and it went down well, even that early in the morning. On the downside, the spices Tjips uses are fairly run of the mill.

There is a wide array of sauces but the ones I had could’ve been a little livelier – the hot sauce didn’t have enough of a fiery kick for me.

It’s a reasonably priced joint and you can even order from Tjips on Uber Eats. These chips are a foodie’s delight for those important ’Gram pictures of what you’re about to eat. Visit Tjips on the east side or look out for its food truck.
