Just when you thought Phala Phala had gone away after the Public Protector and SA Reserve Bank had cleared President Cyril Ramaphosa of wrongdoing, it comes back through strange channels.

While Newzroom Afrika anchor Xoli Mngambi was interviewing Eswatini spokesperson Alpheous Nxumalo, the latter – out of the blue – remarked that his country had properly functioning banking systems which “don’t allow people to hide money under sofas in sitting rooms. We’ve got clear international systems that we’re applying.” How it stings that even little Swatis are laughing at our expense.

South Africa was recently astounded when former president Jacob Zuma was seen singing at a meeting with white Afrikaners after delivering a speech. It has now been confirmed that he was singing for rands and cents.

The man who hosted him, Louis Liebenberg, said this week that he had given money to Zuma’s MK Party, but – strangely – did not remember how much. “I don’t count money. If I have R10, I give away R9. I never count. I’m not an accountant,” said the man who is probably the only known person not to count money.

Election time is rightfully called the “silly season”. Ordinarily, not many care about our leaders’ religious affiliations, but this week EFF leader Julius Malema officially debunked the theory that he is not a Christian, emphasising his Seshego Baptist Church connections.

He assured us that he is a committed Christian of whom his mother would be proud. Well, maybe not of the Antichrist confusion, but certainly of the church he built in her honour. “We’re full members of this church,” said Malema in October last year, when he visited the church with his wife Mantwa.

The DA recently released a controversial election ad in which the national flag is consumed by flames. Many took to social media to criticise the party, with former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela expressing disappointment, saying the DA could have used other ways to send its message. Do you think the DA took it too far with this ad?
