In 2016, South Africa finished 137th out of 139 countries in mathematics and science education quality in the World Economic Forum’s Global Information Report 2016. The education of science and mathematics is important and many factors have contributed to the current crisis which we have in regards to education of these subjects.

Science, therefore, is not a preferred subject in South Africa and we are not producing enough scientists in our country because of the quality of education as well as external factors such as not having proper facilities and equipment.

Eighteen months ago, Anglo American partnered up with Parktown High School for Girls in Johannesburg in order to build four new laboratories for the school in order to promote science as a subject and career tract.
