THE African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in the General Gizanga Mpanza Region held a media briefing to address issues affecting the region at its offices on November 2.

Among the issues on the agenda were the Maphumulo council, Mandeni Municipality issues, youth misrepresentation at the KwaDukuza Municipality, Ward 28 drugs issue and the ANC KwaDukuza sub region.

ANC Youth League regional chairperson Mfanafuthi Ngcobo said that it must be known that the ANCYL is a body of opinion within the broader body of politics.

“On the Maphumulo council issue the ANC Youth league is extremely enraged by the decision taken by the Maphumulo Municipality to replace the council vacancy that was created by the resignation of young council member Nkanyiso Hlongwa, who was replaced [on October 31] by an older person. As the ANC Youth League of this region, we wish to unconditionally and publicly withdraw our support from this decision.

“We angrily wish to state that this decision enjoys no sacred sign from the ANC Youth League and we commit to challenge it with all means necessary,” said Ngcobo

The ANCYL also noted that its position of “nothing about us without us” is being “undermined” and feel that the youth of Maphumulo are “taken for a ride” as they are overlooked for strategic positions in the municipality.

Another area of concern the Youth League found disturbing was that of the “slavery mentality” being employed by KwaDukuza Municipality authorities — not affording their employees salaries due to them as per work done.

“This municipality has normalised to accept services rendered by workers at the Youth Advisory Centre but not paid their salaries.

“These workers have worked for more than three months without salaries or stipends.

“We believe that this is a deliberate disregard of the labour laws governing the country and exploitation of the highest degree.”

In closing, Ngcobo reiterated the league’s position on the controversy involving Malusi Gigaba who is from Mandeni, by reinsuring that they support him 100% as they believe the leaking of a video of him engaging in a sexual act is a work of character assassination.
